Yesterday had me missing my Grandma (or G.), Pat, so I whipped up the almost identical healthier dessert she used to bribe us with to finally get out of their swimming pool on late summer nights growing up. (Except we caught on and would eat it on the edge while still 1/2 submerged.) It was so good that we thought it was just as “bad” for us as any sugary laden treat.
But..it’s not! And it’s really simple to make with a banana, some chopped up raw nuts (I am using a mixture of walnuts, pecans, and peanuts here), and maple syrup drizzled over some non-dairy ice cream. She used to use frozen yogurt back then but this is a soy vanilla version.
My grandparents were not just pioneers in the history of Shaklee (the #1 natural nutrition company in the U.S.) but they were early “health nuts” in a time when plastic was becoming popular and the T.V. dinner was introduced. For 50 years they have exemplified a natural, healthy lifestyle and the older I get, the more I realize how lucky we really were to grow-up with role models like them.
And I mean, seriously, we got to eat dessert AND swim at the same time.
