Healthy Halloween Candy – Myth or Truth?

“If you look at the ingredients in most classic candies, it is pretty shocking. They are filled with preservatives, artificial flavors and colors, high-fructose corn syrup and genetically modified ingredients. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Whether you’re looking for artificial dye-free candies for your kids, a little holiday indulgence for yourself or something to pass out to trick-or-treaters, here are 6 candies that you can feel good about indulging in. 1) UnReal Candy Coated Milk Chocolate Peanuts. It is well-known that M&Ms contain a lot of artificial dyes, as is standard in the mass candy market. But UnReal is moving to change that standard. Their Peanut M&M equivalent contains no artificial colorings. Instead, they dye their candies with carrot juice, red cabbage juice, beetroot juice, hibiscus juice, annatto extract and turmeric extract. All of their chocolate and sugar is fair trade. They contain no corn, no soy, no gluten, no GMOs. They are what candy should be, a real ingredient treat, not a chemistry experiment. 2) Justin’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups. Dark chocolate Reese’s contain emulsifiers like PGPR, the preservative TBHQ and artificial flavors — sounds delicious, right? On the other hand, Justin’s are lower in sugar, all organic, made with real ingredients and Rainforest Alliance Certified. You can taste the difference. 3) Boom Chicka Pop Kettle Corn. With no GMOs, no high-fructose corn syrup and only 4 ingredients, this tasty treat will be a welcome addition to this year’s candy sack. They come in small snack sizes, too — perfect for grabby trick-or-treaters. This is a great option to replace candy corn, with the perfect hit of sweet and salty. 4) Equal Exchange Milk Chocolate Minis. If you’re looking for a Hershey’s chocolate replacement, you won’t be disappointed with Equal Exchange. All of their chocolates are Rainforest Alliance Certified. And these minis are touched with a hint of tasty hazelnut! Hershey’s uses low quality chocolate in their bars—not Equal Exchange. This is real chocolate, and your trick-or-treaters (ahem, or you) will definitely enjoy it more than a mini Hershey bar. 5) Yummy Earth Organic Pops. Loaded with vitamin C, these lollipops are gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, vegan, tree nut free, artificial dye free and contain real fruit extracts. Their sweetness is derived from evaporated cane juice and brown rice syrup, both organic of course. It’s a treat that will do a body a little good! 6) Heavenly Organics Chocolate Mint Honey Patties. It’s time to ditch York’s corn syrup and artificial flavors. You may have seen these individually wrapped delights at the cash register of your local health food store. If you haven’t tried one, there is no time like the present! With nothing but unsweetened chocolate, peppermint oil and raw organic white honey, candy doesn’t get much healthier than this. It is a perfect amount of natural sweetness balanced with a refreshing hit of peppermint. If you’re a fan of York Peppermint Patties, you’ll love these. Just because it’s Halloween doesn’t mean you have to put harmful foods into your body. While candy is a treat, it’ll taste and feel a whole lot better to consume real ingredients rather than the junk that fills mainstream candy. It’s time to tell Big Candy that we want treats, not tricks!” From “6 Healthy Halloween Candies to Replace Your Favorites” By Jordyn Cormier
